The
Neutersol® Solution
Phase
I of the Black Bear Sterilization Project
(safety and efficacy studies of Neutersol® treatment
on captive bears)
These
studies will measure the following parameters on tranquilized
or anesthetized captive Black Bears:
- Weight
- Black
Bear ID with photo and injectable microchip information
- Testicular
Mass
- Blood
Chemistry Profile
- Blood
Zinc Level
- Complete
Blood Count
- Testicular
Ultrasound Examinations
- Testicular
Histopathology
- Semen
Analysis
Phase
I studies will involve captive Black Bears and as many
as necessary to ensure a statistically significant result.
These
testing parameters will need to be repeated at various
intervals during the Phase I studies. Once safety and
efficacy have been established, however, Phase II studies
may begin concurrent with Phase I studies.
Phase
II Studies of the Black Bear Sterilization Project
Once
safety and efficacy and dosing of Zinc Gluconate intra-testicular
injections have been demonstrated and established, Phase
II studies, involving the sterilizing by Neutersol®
injections of tranquilized or anesthetized residential
wild Black Bears, will begin. The term "residential"
implies bears living in or near residential neighborhoods.
Many New Jersey Black Bears are daily visitors to New
Jersey residential neighborhoods. Individual bears in
this category will be treated with the chemical sterilant
and observed on a daily basis by resident neighbors.
The
treated bears in this category of individuals, like the
subjects in the Phase I category, will be initially tested
and measured by the following parameters at the time of
Neutersol® treatment:
- Black
Bear ID with photo and injectable microchip information
- Radio
Collar Application in order to quickly recover patient
as necessary
- Testicular
Mass
- Blood
Chemistry Profile
- Complete
Blood Count
- Testicular
Ultrasound Examinations
- Testicular
Histopathology
- Blood
Testerone Measurement
- Semen
Analysis
Phase
two studies will involve at least 10 subject bears or
as many as will be necessary to get statistically significant
results.
Phase
III studies may begin concurrent with Phase I and II studies
once safety and efficacy have been established.
Phase
III Studies of the Black Bear Sterilization Project
Phase III will involve continuous mass Black Bear Sterilizations
in order to maintain a healthy New Jersey Black Bear Population
in both genetic diversity and population numbers. The
number of individuals involved in Phase III Studies will
be determined by actual population estimates, ideal population
size and a number of other factors involved in normal
population growth. The targeted individuals will be chosen
by our wildlife biologist experts using a number of identifiers.
